BS/OD OST – Bad Tea

Since I wanted to play around with some new techniques, this one took a little bit more than an hour.  James Bernard, who is a Reason/Record guru for Propellerheads, recently posted a really cool video on some tricks that I wanted to test out.  It’s kind of subtle in this particular song since it deals with some of the background guitar work.  You might hear some of that panning back and forth if you listen on headphones.

One thing that I didn’t do in this song is a lot of quantizing.  I’m trying to get better at being a musician.  Imagine that!  So, I’m forcing myself to commit to a performance more often.  I’m hoping that this will make some of the things I do sound a little less robotic.

Anyway, this particular song is for the nasty little trip that Savage is having after his ‘not tea’.  Kudos to those who know where that comes from.  Not that it’s anything really obscure but I’m sure a number of people don’t get it.

Of Course I Love Children!

So, I decided to do something a little on the creepy since Halloween is coming up.  Okay, I guess it’s not exactly out of character for me to do something creepy.  Anyway, here’s Dr. Caterpillar telling us how he feels about kids. This one goes out to all of my loyal fans who love me.  I’m sure there’s at least one or two of you.

This image was rendered in Carrara with post work done in Photoshop Elements and Postworkshop. If you want to see a larger version of it, you can go to here.

The Adventure Of Doing 3D Fanart

by shaggy on October 10, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Lately I’ve been trying to get into doing more fanart and with the way that I do things, it can be tough.  When putting together a fairly popular character such as Yoko from Gurren Lagann, you have to have certain things right so they’re able to be recognized.  So, I either have to find 3D models of clothing that’s already done or I have to model them myself and both of those are very time consuming.

Most of the decent anime 3D modeling is done by the Japanese which I’m sure is a huge surprise.  With that being the case, the websites that said models are located at are also in Japanese. I don’t speak or read Japanese!  While there’s a nice Chrome plugin to translate webpages automagically, it can be painful and time consuming reading the what ends up being ‘Engrish‘.

Now, I am trying to do more of my own modeling but doing so is even more time consuming than reading through pages and pages of Engrish.  When it comes down to it, I’m most concerned with putting together a finished piece of art and doing it within a respectable amount of time since it’s usually done for a commission or to get folks to check out my other more original stuff.  If there was more hours in each day, I probably could do all of the modeling myself.

Back to the image of Yoko. It’s certainly not perfect as it is. While giving her a different hairdo can be acceptable, her trade mark hair props are not there.  I’ll probably have to make those myself which is actually not that difficult.  I may even have a different hair model that could work better.  It would be nice to be able to find what was used in the image on this site which is where I found Yoko’s clothing.

Some people might think that I’m cheating by putting together fanart in this way or that I’m a hack at what I do in the first place.  Putting scenes together, adjusting figures, setting up textures, positioning lights and doing what modeling needs to be done does take a certain amount skill and ability. That doesn’t even consider what post work is done after all that 3D work.  It’s fun for me to do and other people seem to enjoy it from time to time.  That’s what matters.
