I know that I’m quite late in playing this game but I ended up getting it really cheap during Steam’s holiday sale. It seemed like a game I would really enjoy and I could pass up the tiny bit of change it cost for me to buy it. Needless to say, I should play more indy games in general.
Trine is a quasi 2.5D side scroller/puzzle game with a back story that doesn’t suck. Sure, it’s not anything revolutionary but the plot does make you want to know what’s going to happen next. In some games that I’ve played, the story always seemed like an after thought but I didn’t get that from this game.
With Trine, you basically travel along and switch between using a thief, wizard and a fighter. Each one gains different abilities as time passes and you have to figure out how to use them to solve various puzzles. The controls are simple and quite easy to get the hang of and the pacing was pretty spot on. It’s definitely one of the better indy games in this genre.
Despite that, I do have one gripe. I really wish that the game had more in the way of bosses. Towards the latter part of the game, you start to get powerful enough where most enemies don’t take much to vanquish. If I died, it was usually because I fell into a pool of lava or fire. The puzzles were still quite engaging, though, but I think they could have done more to spice up the combat.
Trine 2 was released in December and I’ll probably pick it up at some point in the near future. I’m looking forward to see how they improved things and I’m curious as to where the plot will go. Trine was a pretty decent game and I give it 4 out 5 treasure chests.
