My Growing Family

The computer in the picture below is the reason why there was no comic today. Kate and I talked things over and we decided it was time to upgrade my audio computer to a newer model. My old computer just wasn’t up to challenge of running some of the software I needed to use for writing orchestral stuff. I’m hoping that this one will last me about five years just like my old one did.

So, what will become of the little white iMac? It will be added to the network of computers that I have in the studio so that I can use it in my render farm. I do have a few other ideas on how I can utilize it, though. It most certainly will be put to use. If you look in the upper left hand corner of the picture, you can actually see it sitting by my Little Phatty. It now has a fresh install of Snow Leopard on it and I’ll probably configure it tomorrow for its new purpose.

Since everything is going well with the new setup, I should have no problem putting in the time for a comic on Friday. I may even get started on it tomorrow if I get some other things accomplished before lunch time. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Weekly Music Update!

Despite getting a lot done with various projects over the past week, I don’t have anything specific to report. I’m trying my best to spread my time over a few different things so that I can get more accomplished. I would probably get a lot more done if I didn’t feel like I needed so much sleep! One day I’ll sleep like a normal person again.

As far as my orchestration class goes, I’m absorbing more and more each day. This weeks lesson is a continuation at our look on the strings department. I’m starting to be able to visualize how to arrange things better now that I have a grip on the various instruments and their different voices. My instructor, Ben Newhouse, really knack for bringing all the necessary information down to my level of understanding. I mean, it’s all technical but it’s not to the point where it’s out of my range of understanding. I’m glad that I’m having such a good experience with my first try and an online class.

A Night of Music and a Morning of Beer

Kate arrived home from an outing around 6pm last night. It was about 20 minutes before that when I remembered that our friends, The Dreamscapes Project, were playing a show at a new music venue in DC. So, I covered up the dinner that was cooking on the stove and we jumped in the car.

The Hamilton Live is about a two block walk from the Metro Center station which is pretty damn quick. I normally hate going into DC but I will sometimes venture over there if there’s something I really want to do. Why do I hate going into DC? Well, there’s no particularly good way to get there. The local traffic makes for a terrible drive and parking isn’t cheap. The Metro is an alternative to driving but it has it’s own issues. Either way, it takes us about 1 to 1 1/2 hours to get into the middle of the District. I can pretty much drive from our house to Baltimore in about the same amount of time.

We arrived at The Hamilton around 7:30pm and found it to be quite a swanky restaurant. We walked through the main dining area and then headed to a set of stairs that went down to where the music venue was. While it didn’t feel as upper class as the dining area, it was still quite comfortable and nicely laid out. It reminded me a lot of the Birchmere which is another venue that I like quite a bit.

Opening up for the The Dreamscapes Project was Taylor Carson and his band. The music they played is firmly set in the indy rock genre but you also get a tasty of country and roots rock. I was pleased enough with their set that I ended up buying their latest CD, Defending The Name, which was also rather well done.

The Dreamscapes Project played one of the best shows that I’ve ever seen them play over the ten years that I’ve known them. Every time I think they set a bar for themselves, they raise it just that much further at their next show. It was also quite a treat to hear them going through such a nice sound system. You can check out all the pictures that I took if you go over to my Picasa page.

After a terrible ride home on the Metro, we stumbled into the house a bit after Midnight. Somehow I ended up getting out a bed at around 8am and was surprised to see that Kate was up as well. I ended up having some breakfast and then we decided it was time to bottle our first batch of beer. While it’s not carbonated just yet, I took a taste from the keg and it was pretty darn good! We’ll get to have the finished product in a week or two. I posted some pictures below of what this part of the process was like so that you can check it out. Enjoy!
