While I’ve been primarily playing console games over the past several years, I was glad to see that Steam finally released it’s OSX client. When I finished my transition to the dark side, I all but gave up on computer games. I got tired of building a new computer ever 18 to 24 months to keep up with the technology. I also lost a lot of faith in Windows after Vista came out. Now that Steam games are going to start coming over to the dark side, I may play a few more computer games.
The first game I played with the new Steam client was Portal since it was a freebie. While it was a rather short game, it was quite a refreshing change from the typical first person shooter. I really enjoy puzzle games of this caliber and it was quite a while since I played one so compelling. It was also nice to finally understand what the whole “The cake is a lie!” thing was about. I heard it chanted a number of times at conventions but I never cared enough to look up what it was all about. Now that I know, I’m rather amused.
The other game that I’ve been playing lately has been Final Fantasy XIII on PS3. I’ve had a number of my friends moan and groan about how bad it was but there were also some that seemed to enjoy it. Being a Square Enix whore, though, I knew that I would buy it regardless of what other people said about it.
Despite it being quite different from previous titles in the Final Fantasy franchise, I am enjoy it. Actually, it reminds me a bit of Crisis Core on PSP. Both games rely heavily on the story line to keep you interested in playing. So, if you find yourself hating the plot, the game will get boring very quickly. That hasn’t really been a problem for me.
Right now I’m about 4 hours or so into the game and it’s been extremely linear so far. While I don’t mind this, it is a little annoying not being able to explore anything. The scenery is quite lovely and I keep hoping that I can check more of it out but the game just steers me straight ahead. The game does have a baby chocobo living in the afro of one of the main characters, though. You have to love that.
