savageingrassIn an attempt to give BS/OD some higher quality images with the next chapter, I started learning how to add more vegetation to my scenes rather.  As you can see from the most recent comics, my landscapes are kind of flat.  I’m hoping to change that and this is an example of what’s to come.

One of the biggest reasons I haven’t done something like this before is because I wasn’t sure how to handle it it in an efficient way.  Everything I read about previously made it seem like my render times would be extremely long adding in grass like this.  This particular image took about ten minutes to render which isn’t bad but it could have been much longer if I used other methods.  While the grass doesn’t look extremely realistic, I think it will fit in pretty well with the style of BS/OD.

Another thing thing I finally figured out was how to get network rendering working properly with Carrara.  Since I have two machines in the studio, it only makes sense that I use them in tandem when rendering out images.  When I tried it out before, everything ran extremely slow on the second computer and I couldn’t figure out why. Well, it turns out that it was trying to render across my wireless network instead of the hard wired LAN I have set up here.  After I fixed that little problem, renders went through much faster.

Well, I hope to figure out a few more tricks before the next chapter starts.  Considering the fact that I’ve been teach myself all this 3D stuff, I’m pretty happy with how I’m progressing.  There really is a lot to learn but I think I’ll get better if I just figure out little bits at a time.
