For the past several years, Kate and I have been making our yearly visit to the Small Press Expo. I must admit that going to things like this is quite a treat and can be more rewarding than more commercial conventions. We spent about three hours wading through all of the independent comics and we came home with a good handful of treasures.
One of the things I picked up with a book from Pop Culture Shock Therapy. What can I say? My sense of humor is a bit on the twisted side. Kate read through the book scowling but she did laugh occasionally.
I also picked up a handful of postcards from Hello With Cheese. I need I had to pick them up when I saw this piece. Yes, it’s very wrong but I laughed out loud after seeing it. After all, I needed to have some more artwork to put up in the studio.
One of our favorite persons to visit at SPX is Andy Runton. He pens a wonderful comic called http://www.owly.com“>Owly and we picked up his latest edition. Andy is just one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet and he always makes time to chat with everyone. I was excited to see that a little Owly animation was recently completed by Sprite Animation Studios. If you’re not familiar with Sprite Animation, they are a small studio in California that was founded by former members of Square USA. The little Owly cartoon is very cute and I feel that they did a good job capturing the essence of the comic.
I must say that SPX was the highlight of my weekend. Despite not having such a great time at Horrorfind Weekend on Sunday, I still feel like I came away from my weekend on a positive note. SPX is just one of those places that inspires you since there’s such an abundance of incredible artists there. If you’re in the area, I suggest checking it out next year!
